Historia:

La alquimia humana se rige, igual que toda alquimia, por el Principio de Intercambio Equivalente: hay que dar algo de un determinado valor para conseguir algo del mismo valor. Sin embargo, para realizar dicha alquimia, se necesitan dos cosas muy preciadas: los conocimientos para llevar a cabo la transmutación, y la propia alma. Por ambas, hay que pagar. Los hermanos Elric desconocían que el precio sería el cuerpo de Alphonse, el menor, y la pierna izquierda de Edward, el mayor. Tras ésto, y en un momento de desesperación, Ed sacrificó su brazo derecho para recuperar el alma de su hermano y atarla a una armadura. Ed sustituyó los miembros perdidos mediante Automail, y poco después empezó junto a su hermano a viajar por todo el país buscando la forma de recuperar la totalidad de sus cuerpos originales.

Para ello, Ed aceptó la oferta de un oficial del Estado, el Coronel Roy Mustang, para ser parte del ejército, donde alcanza el rango de Alquimista Nacional, donde se le da el nombre de Alquimista de Acero, lo cual le da más libertad de movimiento.
