Teito Klein es un ex esclavo enviado a asistir a la academia militar del Imperio Barsburg es debido a su capacidad de utilizar Zaiphon, un tipo de poder sobrenatural. The ability is rare, and thus highly prized. La capacidad es raro, y por lo tanto muy apreciada. Teito is an amnesiac and doesn't remember anything of his past, but he has recurring and often traumatizing dreams in which he sees a grand church or castle and a man he feels he may know. Teito es un amnésico y no recuerda nada de su pasado, pero son recurrentes, ya menudo traumática sueños en los que ve una gran iglesia o castillo y un hombre que siente que puede saber.
After a year at the academy, Teito takes the graduation exam; it is notoriously difficult with the average pass rate of one in twenty-five and rumor has it that candidates died in the exam.
