En un mundo donde la magia y la ciencia convergen, Touma Kamijou (también puede escribirse: Taouma o Toma Kamijo), un chico de instituto, vive en una ciudad donde la mayoria de la poblacion son estudiantes.
Algunos estudiantes son superhumanos quienes poseen poderes mentales, pero Touma tiene un nivel muy malo por que no tiene ningun poder mental.
Su vida parece estar rodeada de infortunios, esto se debe a que su mano derecha, tiene la habilidad de negar o romper todo tipo de poder sobre natural, se dice que hasta rechaza las bendiciones de Dios, dándole muy mala suerte.
Un día encuentra una chica colgando de su balcón con atuendo de monja la cual dice llamarse Index y que era perseguida por grandes magos ya que ella es la guardiana de unos libros de magia prohibidos "Librorium-Prohibitorum". Touma lo toma a broma, pero mas tarde al volver a su casa encuentra a Index mal herida por sus persiguidores y se da cuenta que la magia de la hablaba index era verdad, ahora Touma tendra que ayudar a Index.
