El personaje principal es Zed, un muchacho de 15 años que vive en un lugar llamado Calm. La situación actual de su vida lo frustra y siente que en algun sitio hay un lugar en donde él puede vivir más libremente. Un día, atraído por un viento misterioso, Zed se mete en una hendidura del espacio-tiempo (portal), buscando las respuestas que pudieran estar allí. Llevado por el viento, él consigue transportarse a un mundo en guerra, en el cual libran batallas los Shard Caster, usuarios mágicos que usan seres que invocan mediante esferas llamadas Shards, con las cuales también usan Espíritus.

Noa, el otro protagonista, es el mejor amigo de Zed. Él lo ayuda a escapar de Calm pero luego Noa también será transportado a ese nuevo mundo al que va Zed. La diferencia es que Zed llega a un país llamado Templar y Noa llega a Neotopia.

Con la energía de los Espíritus, los Shard Caster pueden utilizar magia. Fascinado por este poder, Zed intenta convertirse en un Shard Caster. Sin embargo, él todavía no sabe que en su cuerpo reside el “Amir Goul”, un Espíritu poderoso con la energía de influir el futuro del mundo. Amir Goul es uno de los Espíritus más poderosos y él, junto con otros Espíritus Key, puede destruir o salvar el mundo. Hay un total de seis Espíritus Key: "Amir Goul", "Prónimo", "Sáchura" (cuyo dueño es Noa), "Monardi", "Jumamis" y "Shadin".

Zed debe enfrentar varios desafíos para descubrir quién es realmente y qué es lo más importante para él.
